Two glands drive this lesson. The thyroid sets your metabolic rate — how fast every cell in the body burns fuel. The adrenal glands hold your blood pressure and your blood sugar up when the body is under stress.
So think of the thyroid as a throttle. Too much thyroid hormone and the throttle's stuck open — everything runs hot and fast. Too little and the throttle barely moves — everything runs cold and slow.
The adrenal glands work differently. They're not a throttle. They're a reserve tank. Under stress, they release cortisol and aldosterone, and those hormones are what keep your vessels squeezed down and your glucose up. Take the reserve tank away, and a routine illness turns into shock.
Both systems fail in a direction you can predict from the gland's job. That's the whole lesson: mechanism first, and the presentation falls out of it.
