At EMT, you support a delivery. At AEMT, you still support a delivery. Nothing about a normal birth calls for a new skill. So start here, because everything else in this lesson is what happens when normal goes wrong.
Position her supine with knees bent and drawn up, or let her find a position of comfort. Keep the field clean. As the head delivers, you support it — you don't pull it. Check for a nuchal cord, a loop of umbilical cord around the neck, and slip it free if it's there.
Support the body as it delivers. Keep the newborn level with the mother. Dry the newborn and stimulate her. Clamp and cut the cord once pulsations stop, or per your local protocol.
The placenta delivers on its own. Don't pull the cord to speed that up. Collect the placenta — the hospital wants to look at it. Then assess the newborn for warmth, airway, and stimulation, and assess the mother for bleeding.
Your job during a normal delivery is to guide it, not run it. That's the fact tested here: control, don't intervene mechanically.
