1. What the monitor is actually showing you

So start here. This is the mistake that costs the most points in this domain: a cardiac monitor shows you electricity, not blood flow. The tracing on the screen is the heart's electrical system firing. It says nothing on its own about whether the heart is pumping.

That's why a rhythm can look completely organized while the patient has no pulse at all. You'll see that pattern later in this lesson, and it's the single most tested idea in AEMT-level rhythm recognition. So every time you read a rhythm, you correlate it with a pulse check. Not sometimes. Every time.

Your job at this level is pattern recognition plus clean data capture. You sort what's on the screen into two buckets. Organized and compatible with a pulse, or one of the four patterns that changes what you do in the next five seconds. And you acquire a 12-lead clean enough that the person who reads it can trust it. You're not expected to name every dysrhythmia or localize an infarct. That's Paramedic-level work.
