1. Two Populations, One Shared Trap

So this lesson covers two age groups at once, and here's why. Children and older adults both hide their emergencies from you, just in opposite directions.

A child compensates so well that they look almost fine right up until they don't. Their vital signs stay normal while the body works hard behind the scenes. Then they crash all at once. An older adult does the opposite. Their body doesn't mount the usual warning signs at all. So a heart attack shows up as weakness, and a serious infection shows up as confusion. None of the textbook findings are there for you to spot.

So your assessment has to adjust for each. With children, you weight your general impression and their work of breathing heavily, because that's where the early truth is. With older adults, you weight the change from their baseline, because "normal for them" is the only reference point that actually means something.
