Before you touch a button or draw up a drug, you're answering two questions. Does the patient have a pulse? And is the rhythm organized or chaotic?
No pulse, chaotic rhythm — that's unsynchronized defibrillation. A pulse, but the organized rhythm is unstable — that's synchronized cardioversion. A pulse, but the rhythm is dangerously slow — that's a drug, then pacing.
