The brain runs on a steady supply of oxygenated blood and on orderly electrical signaling. So it fails one of two ways.
Something cuts off the blood supply. That's a stroke, or a syncope episode if the cutoff is brief and reverses on its own. Or the electrical activity misfires. That's a seizure.
Both show up the same way to you at the scene. The patient's behavior changes. Their speech changes. Their movement changes. You're not figuring out which artery is blocked or which part of the brain is firing wrong. You're recognizing that the brain is in trouble, protecting it, and getting the patient to the right hospital fast.
We'll start with stroke, since it's the one where your timing decides the patient's treatment options.
